Lunch Time Structure Fire Held to Single Alarm

At 12:34 p.m. on Friday, March 24th, the North Haines Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to 14700 block of Elk Creek Rd, in unincorporated Meade County, for a reported structure fire in an occupied residence.

First arriving firefighters found a heavily involved free burning structure fire in an attached garage that was extending into the attached structure. Crews immediately began an aggressive transitional attack with crews operating both inside and outside of the structure.  It was also reported that the occupant had re-entered the burning structure and had not been seen exiting the structure.

Firefighters were able to quickly account for all occupants, and confirmed the structure was clear of any other occupants. Due to the rural location, and the lack of water supply, a second alarm was struck for additional manpower and water support. With the quick actions of the initial responders, ultimately the second alarm was canceled.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and full investigation will be completed by the property owner’s insurance company. The fire appears to be accidental in nature.

Due to quick actions of the owners, and first arriving firefighters from Rapid City Fire Department, Box Elder VFD, and Black Hawk VFD the structure is not considered a total loss.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury and was treated at the scene.  There were no injuries to the occupants and no domestic animals were lost.

Agencies responding included Pennington County 911, Meade County Dispatch, North Haines Volunteer Fire Department, Rapid City Fire Department, Black Hawk Volunteer Fire Department, Piedmont Volunteer Fire Department, Ellsworth Air Force Base/28th Bomb Wing Fire Department, Rapid Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Box Elder Volunteer Fire Department, Whispering Pines Volunteer Fire Department, Meade County Sheriff’s Office, Black Hills Fire Chaplains Association, Pennington County Fire Service, American Red Cross serving Western South Dakota and West River Electric Cooperative.
